CALL FOR PAPERS
The International Symposium on Chinese Language and Discourse (ISCLD) is a biennial international symposium that advances the exchange of scholarship and emphasizes an empirical orientation in functional discourse studies of the Chinese language. The previous symposiums have been held as:
ISCLD 1: 2010 University of California, Los Angeles, USA
ISCLD 2: 2012 Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
ISCLD 3: 2014 Birkbeck College, University of London, UK.
ISCLD 4: 2016 Bryant University, USA
ISCLD 5: 2018 University of Sydney, Australia
The theme of the 2020 symposium (6th ISCLD) is Discourses and Multilingualism:Focus on Greater China and Chinese Diasporas. Paper proposals are invited to showcase latest advancements in, but not limited to, the following topic areas:
- Bilingualism & bilingual communication: e.g., individual and societal bilingualism, bilingual communication in professional contexts, translanguaging
- Chinese language and discourse: e.g., discourse and grammar, language and social change
- Chinese language and culture: e.g., discourse and society, language and intercultural communication, new media language and Chinese cultural transformation
- Chinese language and education: e.g., Chinese teaching and learning, Chinese teacher education, Chinese proficiency development and assessment
- Multilingualism and multiculturalism: e.g., multilingual development, global mobility and language use, hybrid culture and identity

Guidelines for Submissions
Abstracts, panel or workshop proposals may be accepted.
• Abstract in English should be 300-500 words, including positions, affiliations, email addresses and mailing addresses for all authors.
• Panel proposals reflecting the conference theme may be submitted. All panel proposals should provide a 300-word rationale and a 100-200 word abstract of each panelist's paper; include affiliation and email addresses for each panelist.
• Workshop proposals relevant to the conference theme may be submitted. Proposals should be 3-5 pages in length, single-spaced.
The Sandra A. Thompson Best Student Paper Award
A cash prize of HK$2000 will be awarded to a paper submitted and presented by a current student who has not had a PhD degree at the time of the symposium. Selection is based on both the content and the presentation. Those who wish to participate in the competition should
indicate the intention with “For the Best Student Paper Award” marked on top of the abstract. A full paper is encouraged but not required for the competition.
