Welcome to the UCLA Professional Training Summer 2020 Workshops in Language, Culture, and Interaction!

 

    We are excited to announce the Professional Training Summer 2020 Workshops in Language, Culture, and Interaction, to be held at the University of California, Los Angeles. The CLIC summer workshop series explores ways to analyze language use in social interaction and how social interactional and usage-based approaches to language can be applied to language teaching and learning. This workshop is intended for scholars from outside the US who are looking to improve their English, understand the US Higher Education system, and improve their skills in studying social interaction.

The program will be held from July 20-August 7, 2020, and is organized by Professors Tanya Stivers and Hongyin Tao.

The CLIC summer workshop series is a three-week program, from July 20-August 7, 2020 with an opening event on July 19. Courses will be Monday-Thursday 9am-12:00 and 1:30pm-5pm. Participants will be on their own for lunch each day from 12:00-1:30pm. On Friday through Sunday, participants are free to organize their own extracurricular activities, with assistance from the program.

Workshop 1 (three weeks): Academic English and Higher Education in the US

Instructor: Liz Carter, PhD candidate in Asian Languages and Cultures, UCLA

This workshop is designed to improve academic English reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities; it also offers an in-depth understanding of the system of higher education in the United States.

Workshop 2 (one week): Conversational Analysis

Instructor:Steven Clayman, Professor of Sociology, UCLA

This workshop provides an introduction to the methods of conversation analysis, and some of the key areas of study in this field.? Sessions will include hands-on experience in analyzing interactional data.? Both the analytic methods and the substantive findings should prove useful to any scholars working with recordings of naturally-occurring interaction.

Workshop 3 (one week): Multimodal analysis in practical settings

Instructor: Tanya Stivers, Professor of Sociology, UCLA

Participants will learn about basic approaches to the study of interaction in settings involving professionals talking with lay people. We will focus on a mix of substantive work and methodological approaches to studying this topic.

Workshop 4 (one week): Topics in Applied Linguistics

This workshop focuses on applying corpus linguistics and interactional analysis in language teaching and learning.

Instructor: Hongyin Tao, Professor of Asian Languages and Cultures & Applied Linguistics

An overview of some of the most important trends in applied linguistics, with a focus on applying corpus linguistics and interactional analysis in language teaching and learning. Participants learn to use corpus resources and tools and incorporate social interactional analysis results in language curriculum design, material development, classroom management, and assessment.
